Touring Cape Town

We’re in Cape Town in what resembles a good old stormy day in the fall. It’s raining pretty hard, and the wind has us rethink the boat trip to Robben Island later this afternoon. It probably won’t be as bad as our trip to Dyer Island trying to find sharks. We both felt quezzy after being thrown around in 10 feet tall waves, but managed to keep it together until and after we were back on shore. We did have seven sharks come around the boat and cage but the visibility wasn’t great – above or below water; which the pictures clearly shows. The sharks were up to 12 feet long, and so close the they didn’t fit in one frame with the wide-angle lens. They looked friendly, and presented the very best side of themselves. We were ready to shake fins with them, but the crew were very strict about the whole no-touching thing 🙂

One got named Isabella by the marine biologist tracking them. The sharks don’t hang around long – 3-4 weeks – before heading out to deeper waters. Fun experience but not much of a thrill ride compared to the lion roaring just outside our vehicle on the last day of our Safari.

Needless to say it was impossible to stand in the cage not starting to sing the song from Jaws… Didn’t seem to affect the sharks.

Show me the way to go home
I’m tired and I want to go to bed
I had a little drink about an hour ago
And it went right to my head
Where ever I may roam
On land or sea or foam
You will always hear me singing this song
Show me the way to go home
