We were soaked. And grounded. Seems the typhoon decided to turn back towards Hong Kong and the city pretty much shut down around 4:00 PM yesterday. First we couldn’t get a back on the Star Ferries. Then we started to notice all shops were closed (a really bad sign in Hong Kong), and once we got back to the hotel, there were shutters in front of the downstairs windows and safety nets in front of the rest. When we asked at the counter, we were told to stay inside and only make it outsite if it was an emergency. “There’s nothing to worry about but don’t go anywhere…”.
Day started bright’n’early. After breakfast we went by the local tailor. Great fabric and ditto guy with a hungry VISA card terminal… Then to The Peninsual or “The Pen” to admire the fleet of the 14 Rolls Royce and the jewelry shops (guess who chose cars over jewelry). Then a short walk to the HK Museum of History, where we tried to dry up while learning about the handover. We went back to the ferries and crossed to have lunch at the Mandarin Landmark. Back towards to hotel, and that’s when we noticed the first typhoon warnings.
Two DVDs, one room service, and much sleep later, and it seems Hong Kong is somewhat back to normal. It’s not raining anymore and from our harborview room we can see the ferries operate again. Didn’t hear any wind, and while it’s cloudy and gray, we’re ready to go back out.
